Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: EFF Exits X Amid Sharp Drop in Engagement and Reach

EFF Exits X Amid Sharp Drop in Engagement and Reach:

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a leading digital rights nonprofit, has announced its departure from X, citing a significant decline in engagement and overall effectiveness on the platform. The decision comes during a wave of negative attention surrounding Elon Musk’s social network, including ongoing debates about its ability to drive traffic. Recently, X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, and analyst Nate Silver publicly disagreed over whether the platform still benefits publishers. Adding to the concerns, a NiemanLab report suggested that including links in posts may actually reduce engagement.

In a blog post, EFF’s social media manager, Kenyatta Thomas, explained that leaving the platform after nearly two decades was not an easy choice. However, the organization concluded that the declining performance no longer justified its continued presence. The numbers highlight a steep drop. In 2018, EFF’s posts generated between 50 and 100 million monthly impressions. By 2024, around 2,500 posts brought in just 2 million impressions per month. Over the past year, 1,500 posts accumulated approximately 13 million impressions in total.

Thomas noted that current posts receive less than 3% of the visibility they once did, underscoring how dramatically the platform’s reach has diminished.

Despite leaving X, EFF will remain active on other platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and across the broader open social web. The organization also clarified that maintaining a presence on any platform does not imply endorsement.
