Google and Intel Expand Partnership to Advance AI Infrastructure and Chip Development:

Google and Intel have announced an expanded multiyear partnership aimed at strengthening AI infrastructure and advancing joint chip development efforts. As part of the agreement, Google Cloud will continue to rely on Intel’s Xeon processors—including the latest Xeon 6 chips—to power AI workloads, cloud services, and inference operations. Google has a long history of using Intel’s Xeon lineup, and this collaboration further reinforces that relationship.

The two companies will also deepen their work on custom infrastructure processing units (IPUs), which are designed to handle data center tasks more efficiently by offloading work from traditional CPUs. This ongoing chip development initiative, which began in 2021, will now place greater emphasis on custom ASIC-based IPUs. While financial details of the deal were not disclosed, the partnership reflects growing demand for CPUs in the AI era. Although GPUs remain essential for training AI models, CPUs play a critical role in running models and supporting overall infrastructure.

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan highlighted the importance of balanced systems, noting that scaling AI requires more than just accelerators. CPUs and IPUs, he said, are key to delivering the performance, efficiency, and flexibility needed for modern AI workloads. The expanded collaboration comes at a time when demand for CPUs is surging, with companies increasingly focusing on securing chip supply.

This trend is further underscored by recent developments like Arm Holdings’ introduction of its own AGI CPU, as the global chip industry works to address ongoing shortages.
