Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Meta Prepares Next-Gen Image and Video AI Models for 2026 Launch

Meta Prepares Next-Gen Image and Video AI Models for 2026 Launch:

Meta is accelerating its artificial intelligence efforts as it builds new models under its Superintelligence Lab, led by Scale AI co-founder Alexandr Wang, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

The company is developing an image and video AI model internally codenamed “Mango,” alongside a new text-based model known as “Avocado.” Both models are expected to be released in the first half of 2026, based on details shared during an internal Q&A session where Wang and Meta’s Chief Product Officer Chris Cox outlined the company’s AI roadmap.

Wang reportedly emphasized that Meta’s next text model will focus heavily on improving coding capabilities, while the visual models aim to go beyond basic image understanding. These so-called world models are designed to reason, plan, and act using visual information, without needing explicit training for every possible scenario.

Meta’s renewed push comes as the company struggles to keep pace with AI leaders such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Over the past year, Meta’s AI division has undergone major restructuring, including leadership changes and aggressive hiring from rival companies. However, several researchers recruited into Meta’s Superintelligence Labs have already departed.

Compounding the challenge, Meta’s long-time chief AI scientist Yann LeCun announced last month that he plans to leave the company to launch his own startup.

While Meta has yet to deliver a breakout AI product, its Meta AI assistant benefits from built-in distribution across the company’s social platforms, where it is embedded directly into app search bars used by billions of people.

With no clear AI flagship success yet, the early projects emerging from Meta’s Superintelligence Lab are seen as critical to the company’s future competitiveness in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
