Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: OpenAI Reportedly Seeks $100B Funding Round at an $830B Valuation

OpenAI Reportedly Seeks $100B Funding Round at an $830B Valuation:

OpenAI is reportedly in discussions to raise as much as $100 billion in a new funding round that could value the company at up to $830 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed sources.

The ChatGPT maker is said to be targeting completion of the fundraise by the end of the first quarter next year and may approach sovereign wealth funds as potential investors. The Information previously reported on the talks, though it estimated a slightly lower valuation of around $750 billion.

This potential capital raise comes as OpenAI continues to make massive financial commitments, including long-term investments that could total trillions of dollars, as it works to maintain its lead in the fast-moving AI race. A significant portion of the funding would likely support inference costs, which appear to be increasingly paid for with cash rather than cloud credits—an indication that OpenAI’s computing expenses have grown beyond what existing partnerships can offset.

As competition heats up from rivals such as Anthropic and Google, OpenAI has accelerated its pace of model releases and expanded its developer tools and ecosystem. At the same time, broader investor enthusiasm around AI has cooled somewhat, with growing concerns about whether the debt-driven spending by companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Oracle, and OpenAI itself is sustainable over the long term.

Adding to the uncertainty are ongoing chip supply constraints, particularly around memory components, which could ripple across the tech industry.

OpenAI has also been rumored to be exploring an initial public offering (IPO) as another avenue to raise tens of billions of dollars to fund its ambitions. The company is reportedly generating an annual revenue run rate of roughly $20 billion. Separately, there has been speculation that OpenAI is courting Amazon for a potential $10 billion investment, which could also include access to Amazon’s custom AI chips.

If finalized, the funding round would significantly bolster OpenAI’s balance sheet. According to PitchBook, the company currently holds more than $64 billion in capital and was last valued at approximately $500 billion in a secondary market transaction.
