Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Volkswagen Halts U.S. Production of ID.4, Shifts Focus Back to Gas SUVs

Volkswagen Halts U.S. Production of ID.4, Shifts Focus Back to Gas SUVs:

Volkswagen has decided to stop producing its all-electric ID.4 at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant, signaling a strategic shift toward higher-volume gas-powered vehicles like the upcoming Atlas SUV. The automaker confirmed that U.S. customers can still purchase the ID.4 until existing inventory is depleted, which is expected to last through 2027.

This move reflects a broader trend among traditional car manufacturers, who are scaling back earlier ambitions to rapidly transition from internal combustion engines to fully electric lineups. While electric vehicles continue to sell, demand has not matched initial expectations. The removal of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit last year further slowed momentum, particularly for mid- to high-priced models.

Introduced in 2020 at a starting price of around $45,000, the ID.4 initially received positive feedback but faced challenges, especially related to software performance. A 2023 refresh improved its reception and boosted sales, yet overall performance remained inconsistent. Sales figures illustrate this volatility: ID.4 sales exceeded 37,000 units in 2023, dropped by 55% the following year, and then rebounded by 31% in 2025 to reach 22,373 units—still below earlier highs.

Globally, Volkswagen reported delivering approximately 382,000 electric vehicles in 2025, a slight decline of 0.2% compared to the previous year. Despite relatively stable global demand, it was not enough to sustain U.S. production of the ID.4.

Looking ahead, Volkswagen plans to utilize its U.S. manufacturing facility for future models, with a strong focus on the next-generation Atlas SUV. Production is set to begin this summer, with availability in dealerships expected by fall.
