Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: ChatGPT Rolls Out Global Group Chats for All Users

ChatGPT Rolls Out Global Group Chats for All Users

OpenAI has officially launched group chats worldwide for everyone using ChatGPT across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. This rollout follows a limited pilot that began last week in regions like Japan and New Zealand.

The new feature lets multiple users collaborate with each other and ChatGPT within a single shared conversation. According to OpenAI, this transforms ChatGPT from a solo assistant into a collaborative space where friends, families, and teams can plan, create, debate, and make decisions together. Group chats can be used for coordinating trips, co-writing documents, comparing options, or tackling research projects, while ChatGPT assists by searching, summarizing, and offering insights.

Up to 20 participants can join a group, provided they accept an invitation. Each user’s personal settings and memory remain private. To create a group chat, users simply tap the people icon and add participants or share an invite link. Everyone will be prompted to set a short profile that includes their name, username, and image.

Importantly, adding someone to an existing conversation starts a new chat, so the original thread stays intact. OpenAI also notes that ChatGPT is designed to understand when to contribute and when to stay silent. Users can mention “ChatGPT” to prompt a reply, and the assistant can react to messages with emojis or reference profile photos.
