Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Character.AI Replaces Teen Chat Access with Safer Interactive “Stories” Feature

Character.AI Replaces Teen Chat Access with Safer Interactive “Stories” Feature:

Character.AI has introduced a new feature called “Stories,” offering users an interactive fiction experience featuring their favorite characters. The launch comes as the company officially restricts its open-ended chatbots from users under 18, following concerns about the mental health risks associated with unrestricted AI conversations.

The move follows increasing scrutiny over AI chat platforms, particularly those available around the clock and capable of initiating conversations. Multiple lawsuits have been filed against companies including OpenAI and Character.AI, alleging a connection between their chatbot interactions and user suicides. In response, Character.AI began gradually limiting access for minors over the past month — and as of this week, under-18 users can no longer engage in open-ended chats with AI characters.

“Stories offer a guided way to create and explore fiction, in lieu of open-ended chat,” the company explained in a blog post. “They will be available alongside our multimodal features, enabling teens to safely interact with their favorite Characters.”

With interactive fiction rising in popularity, the shift is a strategic alternative. However, it may fall short for teens who grew used to the companionship-like dynamics of chatbots — a concern that underscores why the restriction was put in place.

Responses on the Character.AI subreddit reflect mixed emotions. Some teens expressed frustration but acknowledged the necessity of the change. One teen wrote, “I’m so mad about the ban but also so happy because now I can do other things and my addiction might be over finally.” Another commented, “As someone under 18 this is disappointing, but it’s also the right move because people my age get addicted to this.”
