Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Court Blocks OpenAI from Using the Term “Cameo” in Its Sora App

Court Blocks OpenAI from Using the Term “Cameo” in Its Sora App:

OpenAI’s new social app, Sora, debuted with a feature called Cameo, which allowed users to create deepfakes of themselves or others (with permission). The feature quickly attracted controversy — even the estate of Martin Luther King Jr. became involved during its early rollout. Now, the feature faces an additional challenge.

The celebrity video platform Cameo, known for selling personalized messages from public figures, claims exclusive trademark rights to the word “cameo.” A U.S. District Court agreed that the issue warranted immediate action.Judge Eumi K. Lee has issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) preventing OpenAI from using the word “cameo,” or any similar-sounding term, in the Sora app.
The TRO, issued on November 21, 2025, remains in effect until December 22, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. A hearing on the matter is scheduled for December 19, 2025 at 11:00 a.m.

Despite the order, the Sora app still referenced the term “cameo” as of Monday afternoon.

Cameo CEO Steven Galanis praised the ruling, stating:
“We are gratified by the court’s decision, which recognizes the need to protect consumers from the confusion that OpenAI has created by using the Cameo trademark. While the court’s order is temporary, we hope OpenAI will stop using our mark permanently to prevent further harm to the public or Cameo.”

OpenAI, however, disputes Cameo’s claim to exclusive rights over the word “cameo,” the company told CNBC.
