Europe’s Startup Ecosystem Steps into a New Era of Global Potential:
For years, Silicon Valley has dismissed Europe’s startup ecosystem as too small, too slow, or lacking the hunger needed to compete on a global scale. But within Europe, the sentiment is very different — and increasingly optimistic. This year’s Slush conference in Helsinki revealed a venture landscape on the cusp of major transformation, one that many believe is ready to produce its first trillion-dollar company. Founders, investors, and policymakers acknowledged the structural challenges that once held European startups back: limited local customers, scarce capital, and a long-standing trend of founders relocating to the U.S. or exiting too early.
Following the pandemic, major firms like OMERs Ventures and Coatue opened London offices in an effort to deepen their European presence. But those expansions didn’t last — OMERs scaled back its team, and Coatue eventually exited as well. Meanwhile, U.S. investors have pushed the narrative that true innovation requires a move to San Francisco.
However, many at Slush believe that narrative no longer holds. Several venture investors told TechCrunch that concerns about undercapitalization are overstated, emphasizing that U.S. investment in Europe is stronger today than it was five years ago. High-profile moves also tend to skew perception. For example, even as OMERs pulled back, firms like IVP and Andreessen Horowitz announced new London offices — though the latter later reversed course.
Still, the pull of Silicon Valley remains strong, but a growing number of European founders are proving they can build category-defining companies without relocating. As access to capital improves and Europe’s confidence grows, the region’s startup market is stepping fully into the spotlight — ready to compete on the world stage.
