The team of ex-Googlers behind the 3D design app Rooms has launched a new project: Mixup, a playful, AI-powered photo editor available exclusively on iOS. The app lets users create fresh, imaginative images using “recipes” — simple fill-in-the-blank prompts that work with your photos, text, or hand-drawn sketches. With Mixup, you can transform a rough doodle into a stunning Renaissance-style painting, dress your pet in a hilarious Halloween outfit, try out new hairstyles using a selfie, or create something completely absurd — like turning a friend into an Italian brainrot meme. Mixup is powered by Google’s Nano Banana model, but what sets it apart is the interactive “recipe” concept, which turns generative AI into something closer to a fun social game.

According to Things, Inc. founder and CEO Jason Toff — who previously worked on experimental projects at Google, Meta, and Twitter — Nano Banana stands out because it can transform images while keeping them recognizable and natural, without producing uncanny results.

However, the most enjoyable part of Mixup is the ease of sharing user-made “recipes,” allowing anyone to remix or reapply creative ideas without having to craft intricate prompts. “Generative AI is incredibly powerful, but most tools give you a blank text box and expect you to be creative on demand,” Toff explained. “With Mixup, you can simply pick a recipe that already works and fill in the missing pieces.”

Mixup offers a fresh, fun way for people of all skill levels to play with AI-generated imagery — no complex prompting required.
